School Council

Our School Council represents the views of all our pupils, with two representatives from each class (Reception to Year 6).

At the start of each year, children put themselves forward for the role and are voted in by their classmates. Being elected as a School Council representative is something our pupils are very proud of, and they work hard to show the qualities needed to be fantastic role models for others.

The School Council meets regularly in school and plays an important role in:

  • Organising fundraising for charities and school projects.

  • Representing school during community events
  • Sharing ideas to help improve our school and make it a positive, welcoming place for everyone.

  • Acting as our Eco-Council, with members working on a rota to check classes are following our energy-saving rules.

The School Council is led by Miss Braniff, who works closely with other staff members and with The Friends of Silloth Primary School. Together, they ensure pupil voice is at the heart of school life and that our children have real opportunities to make a difference.

Childrens' Mental Health Day February 2026 - Pupil Voice

Pupil voice is important because it empowers children to share their ideas and feelings, helping them feel heard, valued, and involved in shaping their school community.

The School Council shared a whole school questionnaire on Belonging with their classmartes and  we were delighted to discover that the vast majority of our children have said that they feel like they belong, are well cared for in school and have friends to play with.

Children reported that the following aspects of school life made them feel cared for:

Being with my friends, playing games outside, swimming, everyone being kind to each other, interesting lessons, Zones of Regulation, Star Breathing, being able to talk to the teacher about any problems I have, being rewarded for our hard work, story time in class, when people let me play, my teacher, reading area, getting Nutbrown Bear!

We also asked children what they would like to see more of in school, that would further improve their feelings of Belonging and this is what they said:

Do some activities with other children that aren’t in our classes to get to know them better, being included in each other’s play more, quiet zone/area in the playground, more equipment/ideas for playing at break times, more time to ourselves to be quiet or creative

We hugely value the opinions of our children and as a response to the questionnaire, we are implementing the following throughout school:

A Day of Play

We will be taking part in International Day of Play, in the Summer Term. This will be a day dedicated to creativity, teamwork, imagination and having fun together! More details to come…

Chill and Choose Thursdays

We will be starting Chill and Choose Thursdays in Year 6. This will be a quiet, calm space for all classes to go to over lunchtime to play board games, draw or read.

Playground Challenges

Year 6 have made some playground challenges aimed at promoting kindness, togetherness and a feeling of belonging. The children have already started using these with great enthusiasm!
